چکیده

This paper presents an analysis of the technical requirements for Internet Protocol (IP) and Medium Access Control (MAC) protocol to support Dedicated Short Range Communications (DSRC) which is a critical element of the Intelligent Transportation System (ITS). This study classifies the DSRC applications into four categories: unicast vehicle-to-vehicle, unicast roadside-to-vehicle, broadcast vehicle-to-vehicle, and broadcast roadside-to-vehicle. A detailed message flow diagram is developed for each category. This paper also analyzes various optional procedures in the 802.11 standard where these procedures should be considered requirements in DSRC. A major contribution of this study is to introduce a new feature, bridging with layer-3 forwarding, to support multi-hop DSRC communications..

MAC for Dedicated Short Range Communications in Intelligent Transport System

The need for critical improvements to the North American surface transportation infrastructure vis-a-vis alleviation of congestion while enhancing public safety has led to new intelligent transportation system (ITS) infrastructure based on vehicle-to-vehicle (v2v) wireless communications. The allocation of 75 MHz in the 5.9 GHz band for dedicated short-range communications (DSRC) may also enabl...

Ad-hoc Medium Access Control Protocol Design and Analysis for Vehicle Safety Communications

This paper studies the design of ad-hoc Medium Access Control (MAC) protocols for a vehicle or the roadside to send safety messages to other vehicles. Such a protocol is needed by Advanced Vehicle Safety Systems (AVSS) and the national Dedicated Short Range Communications (DSRC) architecture. The problem is formulated to meet the communication requirements of vehicle safety applications and the...

Performance analysis of DSRC priority mechanism for road safety applications in vehicular networks

Dedicated short range communications (DSRC) has been regarded as one of the most promising technologies to provide a robust medium and affordable enough to be built into every vehicle. It is designed to support both road safety and commercial applications. Road safety applications will require reliable and timely wireless communications. However, as the medium access control (MAC) layer of DSRC...

Design and Analysis of Highway Safety Communication Protocol in 5.9 GHz Dedicated Short Range Communication Spectrum

We study the wireless communication among highway vehicles in the newly-assigned 5.9 GHz Dedicated Short Range Communication (DSRC) spectrum. A vehicle-vehicle Location-Based Broadcast (LBB) communication protocol is designed to meet highway safety applications’ communication requirements. The analytical expressions of the performance of the protocol in terms of probability of transmission fail...
